:: SHOULD YOU BE IN THE SCRIBE CASTE? ::
Are you an organized person that thrives on organization, documentation, legalization, and officiation? Do you enjoy roleplaying characters that uphold integrity, objectivity, and duty? Or maybe you like /pretending/ to be those things, but really are being the opposite? Are you an ambassador? A magistrate? A librarian? A scholar? An accountant? Maybe you want to be a cartographer, or an astronomer? Think you can only play as a low caste? Not entirely! While John Norman’s books do not provide an exhaustive list of every subcaste within the Scribes, those mentioned highlight the diverse expertise within this very popular caste. Even, free women of the Scribe Caste – of whom should absolutely be veiled – can have a variety of potential roles.

➤Caste Leadership and Structure
The Caste of Scribes in the City of Selnar is led by esteemed members who oversee various disciplines of knowledge and administration. These leaders ensure the development, advancement, and employment of scribes within their respective subcastes. The caste plays a crucial role in documentation, legalization, and officiation, handling matters such as contracts, citizenship records, caste changes, legal proceedings, and more.
➤Caste Membership
To be recognized as a scribe in Selnar, applicants must complete the caste registration process, including submitting a resident certificate and registering their official seals. Expulsion from the caste may occur due to permanent collaring, treason, slander, or acts of extortion.
➤Core Values and Work
Scribes in Selnar uphold the highest standards of integrity, objectivity, and duty. They may charge fees for their services, accept gratuities, or work directly under the city’s employ. Collaboration, mentorship, and continuous training are integral to the caste’s operation.

:: BASIC SCRIBE CASTE HIERARCHY ::

══ Appointed Roles (individuals elevated to their caste position) ══
▪The CHIEF SCRIBE is the Head of Caste (HOC). He is the Scribe ultimately in charge, whose leadership has been appointed by the Ubar of Selnar. It is his responsibility to guide and involve the entire caste in alignment with the needs (and wants) of Selnar leadership, citizens and residents; and, to lead the Scribe Caste’s biweekly meetings and participate in Head of Castes monthly meetings. His signature and seal is the final authority on caste application and caste expulsion for the city’s Scribes.
▪The ASSISTANT HEAD OF CASTE (aHOC) is a supervising manager of the subcastes and direct subordinate of the Chief Scribe.
▪The PRAETOR or HIGH MAGISTRATE is the supreme ruler in all things legal. ALL IC legal matters will be handled by the Praetor or someone under his command.

══ Ascribed Roles (Individuals born into the caste or assumed voluntarily) ══
▪SCRIBE -- A sworn citizen of Selnar and recognized member of its Scribe Caste. They can be given mandated assignments by the aHOC or HOC. They may also be positioned as an instructor or trainer of a particular skill, craft or trade for an Apprentice Scribe.
Subcastes can include: Magistrate, Ambassador, Recordkeeper, Librarian, Historian, Cryptographer, Cartographer, Teacher, and Editor-in-Chief.
▪APPRENTICE SCRIBE -- A sworn citizen of Selnar, whose skill specialization in a subcaste has not yet been determined to mastery. They are a student working and perfecting their craft beneath the supervision of a fully-recognized Scribe. Formal recognition of an Apprentice’s skill competency must be certified by two figures– a Scribe and the aHOC or HOC Scribe– before they are elevated to the status of Scribe.

══ Other Caste Roles ══
▪CLERK -- A position primarily for the Scribe Caste free women with many potential responsibilities, such as keeping minutes in caste meetings, acting as a secretary for the aHOC or Chief HOC, keeping paperwork for the caste, and also helping with caste slaves. Clerks report to the Assistant Head of Caste.
▪SCRIBE SLAVE -- Owned by the caste itself or its members.

:: ROTATION ON CASTE LEADERSHIP ::
Storywise, due to the corruption of Telnus, the Ubar is distrusting of the Heads of Castes and will periodically want to rotate leadership by either caste vote or appointment.
Out of character– Players can volunteer as heads of caste, with roles designated to rotate periodically, keeping the experience fresh and engaging for everyone. Additionally, players of the general caste membership have the ability to remove an ineffective head of caste through an IC progression and caste meeting vote. (See the city laws for more information on this majority vote option.)

➤Training and Meetings
Scribes in Selnar are encouraged to mentor apprentices, ensuring the continued strength of the caste. Regular meetings are held to discuss caste operations, report on progress, and address concerns within the city.
➤Record Keeping and Court Operations
All legal documents must be properly filed and maintained. Blank forms are available for official use. Court officials are responsible for trial documentation, legal proceedings, and ensuring the due process of law.
